Nathan Lanier

What this engagement required.
Nathan Lanier is a composer whose work spans film and television. We produced two brand story films to give audiences a look behind the music of two distinct projects: High Strung Free Dance, a theatrical release, and Home Before Dark, an Apple TV+ original series.
Both required the same production approach, interview, b-roll, and score, but each presented its own creative and logistical challenge. The engagement covered production, direction, and editing on both films. Music and footage were drawn directly from the original productions. The through-line was built in the edit.
High Strung Free Dance
High Strung Free Dance is a dance film built around a score that spans dubstep, hip-hop, Latin, Bollywood, and electro swing. Nathan composed full original music for the film, including a new song written for the nightclub sequence.
The interview and b-roll were both recorded in Nathan's office, with music files and approved footage provided from the production. Nathan provided a script as a starting point, but the emotional through-line was constructed entirely in the edit. This brand film ran as a Playbill exclusive, featured in their coverage of the film's theatrical release.
Home Before Dark
Home Before Dark is an Apple TV+ original series following a precocious nine-year-old investigative reporter. Nathan's score had to walk a specific line: sophisticated enough to honor the character's intellect, youthful enough to acknowledge her age.
The show had not yet been released at the time of production, and Apple had approved only the clips appearing in the trailer for use without providing source files. Interview and b-roll recorded at Nathan's office, along with additional footage he provided, filled the gaps without repeating what little approved material existed.
